2. 🤝 Make a Deal with Mentees

Duration: 5-10 minutes at session start

Tips
Keep this step brief, yet don't show that you're in a rush.

The Scaffolding Approach

This step follows the scaffolding rule in Planning & Pedagogy. The final objective is to decide which activity to do at which time.

Negotiation Process

Step 1: Present the Session Overview

  • Share the detailed plan with mentees
  • Explain the learning objectives clearly
  • Highlight the expected benefits

Step 2: Encourage Discussion

  • Ask for mentee input on activities
  • Allow time for questions and concerns
  • Be open to reasonable modifications

Step 3: Reach Agreement

  • Confirm understanding of the plan
  • Establish mutual commitment
  • Set clear expectations

Sample Negotiation Script

"Guys! We'll be working on [specific topic] for about [duration]. After that we will have a 5-minute break then move on to our Storytelling Activity. This will last until 10:45 AM, then you guys will have another 15 minutes to play badminton. How do you guys think about this?"

Important
Be specific in the activity that you will do at a certain time. Use play badminton instead of play sports in general, in case you are not able to provide them enough equipments.
